Pace by difficulty, not by clock-watching
The digital SAT is adaptive at the module level: your performance on the first math module decides whether the second module is easier or harder. That makes early accuracy disproportionately valuable. The worst thing you can do is rush the opening questions, make a careless slip, and get routed to the lower-scoring module. Slow down at the start, lock in the questions you know, and let speed come later.
Within a module, think in three passes. On the first pass, answer every question you can solve confidently in under a minute. On the second pass, return to the medium ones that need setup. Save the two or three genuine time-sinks for last, and always put down an answer before you move on — the SAT has no penalty for guessing, so a blank is strictly worse than a guess.

Plug in numbers when the algebra gets ugly
A large share of SAT Math questions can be solved two ways: with clean algebra, or by substituting concrete numbers. When the algebra involves variables in the answer choices, fractions stacked on fractions, or a relationship you cannot picture, plugging in is usually faster and less error-prone.
There are two versions. When the answer choices contain variables, pick a simple value (say x = 3), work the problem numerically, then test which choice produces the same result. When the question asks 'what is the value of' and gives numeric choices, you can often 'backsolve' — start from choice B or C and check whether it satisfies the equation, since the choices are ordered and you can eliminate a direction with one test. Both techniques trade a little arithmetic for a lot of certainty.
- Choose numbers that are easy but not special — avoid 0, 1, or numbers already in the problem, which can make two wrong choices look correct.
- For backsolving, start in the middle: if C is too big, you only have A and B left to check.
- Plugging in shines on percent, ratio, and 'in terms of' questions where symbolic algebra is slow.
Read the question the test is actually asking
The single most common avoidable error is answering the wrong question. The SAT will walk you through solving for x and then ask for the value of x + 2, or solve for the price per unit and then ask for the total. The trap answers are built precisely from the intermediate values you compute along the way, so the number you naturally arrive at is often sitting right there as choice B, waiting for you.
Build a habit: before you bubble anything, reread the final sentence of the question and confirm the units and the quantity. Circle what is being asked — the total, the difference, the value after tax, the number of solutions. This one discipline recovers more points for most students than any new formula.
Know the handful of topics that repeat
SAT Math is not infinite. The bulk of the test comes from a compact set of themes: linear equations and systems, ratios and proportional reasoning, percentages, functions and their graphs, quadratics, exponents, and a smaller slice of geometry, trigonometry, and statistics. Practice under real conditions, then review harder than you practiced
Untimed practice builds knowledge; timed practice builds a score. Once you are comfortable with a topic, rehearse it under the clock so that pacing decisions become reflexes instead of panic. A timed section teaches you what 90 seconds actually feels like, and a full-length simulation teaches you how your accuracy holds up when you are 40 questions deep and tired.
