How to Write AP Free-Response Answers That Score

The free-response section is where AP exams are won and lost, and it is also where the most points get left on the table by students who actually knew the material. The reason is almost never a lack of knowledge — it is that FRQ answers are graded against a strict rubric, and points only exist for things you write down in the way the rubric expects. Learning to write for that rubric is a distinct skill from learning the content.

This guide covers how AP free response is scored and how to answer so that graders can give you every point you have earned. How free response is actually graded

AP free-response questions are scored with a rubric that assigns points to specific, predefined pieces of an answer: a correct setup, a correct substitution, a valid justification, a labeled diagram, a units-correct final answer. Graders are trained to award those points and only those points. They cannot give credit for reasoning you did in your head, and they will not infer a step you did not write.

This has a liberating consequence: partial credit is everywhere. A question can be worth several points, and a wrong final answer built on correct setup and reasoning can still score most of them. The goal on every FRQ is therefore not perfection but point-harvesting — write down every piece of the answer the rubric could reward, even if you are unsure of the finish.

Obey the command verbs

AP questions use precise command verbs, and each one demands a specific kind of response. 'Calculate' or 'determine' means show the numerical work. 'Justify' or 'explain' means give reasoning tied to a principle, in words. 'Describe' means state the relevant features. 'Derive' means start from a fundamental relationship and show the steps. Answering with the wrong mode — a bare number where a justification was asked — forfeits points even when your underlying understanding is correct.

Read the verb before you start writing and let it shape your answer. The most common self-inflicted wound is treating an 'explain' or 'justify' prompt as if it wanted only a calculation, so the number appears but the required sentence of reasoning does not.

  • Calculate/determine: show the math with substituted values and units.
  • Justify/explain: give a reason grounded in a principle, in words.
  • Describe/derive: state relevant features, or build from a fundamental relationship step by step.

Show your work and label everything

For any calculation, write the equation you are using, the values substituted into it, and the result with correct units and reasonable significant figures. This is not busywork — each of those elements can be a separate rubric point, and showing them protects you when an arithmetic slip costs you the final number. A fully worked setup with a wrong answer routinely outscores a correct answer with no work shown.

Label diagrams, graphs, and variables clearly. If a question asks you to sketch a graph, mark the axes, the shape, and any key points the rubric cares about. If you define a variable, say what it means. Graders reward clarity because clarity is what lets them find the points you earned.

Answer exactly what is asked — and manage your time

Answer the specific question, then stop. Extra, unrequested material rarely earns points and can occasionally contradict a correct statement and cost you one. If a multi-part question gives you a value in part (a) to use in part (b), use it; parts are often designed to build on each other, and graders may award later points even if your earlier number was off, as long as your method is right.

Budget your time across the section so every question gets attention. It is far easier to earn the first few points on a fresh question than the last point on one you have already mostly solved, so if you are stuck, write down what you can, move on, and come back.
