Read the data first, the prose last
The instinct to read a Science passage top to bottom like an English passage is the single biggest time sink in the section. Most ACT Science questions point you to a specific table, graph, or figure, and you can answer them by going straight to that data without ever reading the surrounding paragraphs. The prose is there to describe the experiment; the questions live in the figures.
So flip the order. Glance at the passage for about 20–30 seconds to note what each figure shows and what the variables are — what is on each axis, what the units are, what changed between experiments. Then go straight to the questions and let them send you back to the exact figure you need. Only read the body text when a question specifically requires understanding the experimental setup, which is a minority of questions.

Answer trend and lookup questions on sight
A large share of ACT Science questions are pure data retrieval: 'According to Figure 2, what was the temperature at 30 seconds?' or 'As pressure increased, volume...' These are gifts. Find the row or point, read the value or the direction of the trend, and move on. Do not overthink them, and do not second-guess a clear reading of the graph.
Train your eye to describe every trend in one glance: as x goes up, y goes up (direct), y goes down (inverse), or y stays flat. Many questions test nothing more than whether you can state that relationship correctly. Others ask you to extrapolate slightly beyond the data or interpolate between points — the same skill, just extended one step. Speed on these easy questions is what banks the time you will need elsewhere.

Save the conflicting-viewpoints passage for last
One passage in the section is different: instead of data, it presents two or more scientists or hypotheses that disagree, written mostly as prose. This is the one passage you cannot skim your way through, because the questions ask you to compare positions and you actually have to read and understand each viewpoint. It reliably takes longer than a data passage.
Because it breaks the five-minute rhythm, do it last. If you do it first while you are worried about the clock, you will either rush it and miss comparison points or blow your time budget and rush the easy data passages that follow. Handle the fast, figure-based passages first to secure those points, then give the conflicting-viewpoints set whatever time remains — and remember there is no guessing penalty, so every blank should at least become a letter.
Have a timing plan and a fallback
Walk in with a plan rather than reacting to the clock. A simple, reliable structure is to allot about five minutes per passage and check the clock only between passages, not between questions. If you finish a passage under budget, carry the surplus forward; if you run over, cut the next one shorter rather than letting the overrun cascade.
You also need a fallback for when time is tight. If you have five minutes and two passages left, do not try to read carefully — hit the fast lookup questions in each, guess consistently on the ones that need real analysis, and make sure nothing is left blank. A guessed answer scores the same as a carefully wrong one and beats an empty bubble every time.
